According to the World Health Organization, “Stress can be defined as any type of change that causes physical, emotional or psychological strain. Stress is your body’s response to anything that requires attention or action.”

Every day, each one of us encounters people or situations that stress us. A little stress is a normal part of living but becomes unhealthy for both brain and body when it becomes too much and overwhelms us. This results in worry and fear, and can manifest in fatigue, body aches and pains, and mood swings and emotional outbursts.

How we deal with stress depends on the type of person we are and the coping mechanisms that we use. If you’re looking for ways to still be healthy despite the stress that you encounter, read on!

Get enough sleep. Sleeping between 7-9 hours each night will help your body recover from the effects of stress. To make sure you get quality sleep, keep your bedroom dark and avoid electronic devices a few hours before you go to bed.

Eat a healthy diet. A diet that has lots of fresh vegetables and fruits can make a huge difference in how you feel, and how your body deals with stress. A healthy diet also helps to prevent disease and helps you recover faster from sickness.

Exercise regularly. Whether you exercise outdoors or indoors, the important thing is to make sure you incorporate movement into your daily activity. Not only will exercise make your body stronger, the endorphins that you get will put you in a happier, more relaxed mood.

Do something that relaxes you. It could be as simple as taking deep breaths until you calm down. You can also try meditation, or a hobby that interests you. And don’t underestimate the power of social support when you interact with family and friends!
